FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does my gift help?

Your donation supports Community Impact grants, applications for which are submitted by non-profit organizations that are required to demonstrate effectiveness, leadership, stewardship and financial viability.  Applications are carefully reviewed by volunteer Community Review Panels who make recommendations for funding to the Board of Directors.

A portion of funding is allocated to support the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population.  In partnership with trusted non-profit organizations, short term assistance is provided to working families who do not qualify for traditional assistance programming but whose stability is threatened by an emergency.

Do donations stay local?

Yes!  All the money raised through the campaign, special events, and other fundraising initiatives supports programming in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties.

I already give to my church and other charities. Why should I give to the United Way?

Great question! We recognize that many community members support their favorite charities, and we understand that you have lots of choices for how you invest you philanthropic support.  The United Way offers a unique opportunity to support multiple organizations with one gift!  United Way donors support vital services for the most challenging issues plaguing our local communities, such as food insecurity, homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence, transportation, safe activities for youth, health disparities, and much more!

Are United Way donations tax-deductible?

United Way of Northern New York is a federally registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by an individual’s or corporation’s circumstances.

Those contributing through payroll deduction in their workplace should keep a copy of their signed pledge card and maintain their last pay stub of the tax year or Form W-2 from their employer that summarizes the amount withheld for United Way.

If I sign up for payroll deduction, when will deductions start?

Most workplace campaigns are set up to begin payroll deductions with the first pay period of the year.  Please check with your payroll department to ensure that this is the case with your employer.

What happens to my pledge if I change employers?

Your payroll deduction is discontinued when you change employers or leave the workforce, leaving the balance of your pledge unfulfilled.  We encourage you to ask your new employer about supporting the United Way.  If you are retiring or leaving the workforce, we are happy to set you up with a recurring pledge made monthly, should that work within your household budget.
